Katsina State Government has said it is working with stakeholders within and outside government circles, to mitigate the effects of possible and imminent flooding in some parts of the state.
Secretary to the Government of the State (SGS), Abdullahi Faskari stated this while speaking with newsmen in his office on Thursday afternoon.
Faskari said the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had predicted heavy rainfall in some parts of the country in the coming days, with some local governments in Katsina to be affected.
He identified the councils to include Daura, Funtua, Jibia, Kaita, Danja, Bakori, and Bindawa, and that the state government was concerned over the impact such flooding could have on humans, farmlands, and properties.
He said the concerns necessitated for convening a stakeholders’ meeting so that ideas could be exchanged and adequate measures taken to ensure the flooding had minimal effect in the said councils.
He identified those who attended the meeting to include Executive chairmen of the identified councils, commissioners of Health, Agriculture, Information, Local Government, and Chieftaincy Affairs, among others.
Faskari said a major decision taken at the meeting was for extensive sensitization exercise to be carried out across the state, especially the identified councils, on the heavy rainfall and its attendant effects.
He added that agencies like the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), among others, have been put on the alert in the event of any flooding or its effects in the identified councils.
He prayed the outcome of the flood prediction would not be severe or devastating, even as he called on stakeholders and residents in the identified councils to brace up for any eventuality.
