The National Judicial Council (NJC) has dismissed as false a report alleging that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, ordered the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, and his repatriation to Kenya.
In a statement signed by its Deputy Director of Information, Kemi Babalola Ogedengbe, the NJC described the report as a fabrication with no basis in fact.
The Council clarified that no court proceedings, decision, or judgment had been issued where such a directive was made.
The statement further emphasised that Justice Kekere-Ekun had never presided over any case involving Kanu at the Supreme Court, where jurisdictional issues were argued, nor had she made any pronouncement regarding his release.
The NJC further refuted claims that the CJN had written a formal letter to the Kenyan government or its High Commission apologising for Kanu’s arrest and trial.
The Council urged the public to disregard the report, warning against the spread of misinformation.
