NIMASA boss sets up committee to assess one-year performance

The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Bashir Jamoh, has inaugurated a committee to assess the agency’s performance in the last one year.

The committee has representation from the Nigerian Chambers of Shipping (NCS), the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), the Maritime Security Providers Association of Nigeria (MASPAN), the Ship Owners Association of Nigeria (SOAN), the Maritime Journalists, the Nigerian Association of Master Mariners and Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), among others.

Jamoh said the committee was set up to allow for an independent evaluation of his administration achievements in the last 365 days.

The director-general explained that the agency owed it as a duty to inform its stakeholders to present a scorecard of what the present administration of the agency had achieved so far in its four-year tenure.

“We believe the committee will be able to provide a balanced scorecard of our achievements given the calibre of each representative, their integrity, and what they represent and the assessment will be a basis for us to see what progress we are making and areas we need to improve on,” Jamoh said.

Commending the initiative, a member of the committee, Dr Mkgeorge Onyung of the Ship Owners Association of Nigeria (SOAN), said the independent evaluation committee was a welcome idea in the maritime sector, adding that the assessment would be in the most unbiased manner as the expectations are very high.

In her remarks, Mrs Ify Akerele of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, said there was a much needed interaction between NIMASA and the stakeholders, noting that while the scorecards had always been given by the agency to the stakeholders, the stakeholders had been called upon to do the assessment.

“This is a great initiative and it shows humility and a drive to work. We will do our best and reflect the true situation of things,” she said.

It will be recalled that the current management executives assumed office on the March 10, 2020 and have spent one year driving the affairs of the agency and have therefore put in place this committee to conduct an independent assessment of their performance.

However, the director-general said the committee would be expected to complete its performance assessment within two weeks.
