A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ugwu Bridget Onyinye, has built a two-compartment toilet facility for students of Christian Comprehensive High School, Ijomu-Oro, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The facility was commissioned on Wednesday by the Oloro of Oro Kingdom and Paramount Ruler of Oro Kingdom, Oba Joel Olaniyi Oyatoye Titiloye Olufayo II.

Onyinye, who serves at Ayaki Secondary Grammar School, Okerimi-Oro, undertook the project as part of her personal Community Development Service (CDS) initiative.

She said she was moved to act after seeing students use surrounding bushes because of inadequate toilet facilities.

“I saw students going to the bush to relieve themselves and I was scared for their safety, especially with the ongoing security issues in the country and the potential impact on their health. I decided to do something to change that,” she said.

According to her, the situation exposed the students to sanitation, hygiene, privacy and security concerns.

Construction of the facility began in July and was completed with support from NaijaSolve, the Oloro of Oro Kingdom and other individuals who contributed funds and materials.

At the commissioning, the NYSC Local Government Inspector for Irepodun, Nuhu Isa, who represented the Kwara State NYSC Coordinator, commended Onyinye for the initiative and the monarch for supporting corps members.

Isa said Onyinye and another corps member had also carried out similar projects in Oro and Omu-Aran, and appealed to the monarch to support them with career opportunities.

The school principals, Pastor Olatunji and Mrs Babatunde, thanked the monarch for his support and commended Onyinye for the project.

The Oloro urged other corps members to emulate Onyinye and pledged to recommend her and the other corps members in Omu-Aran to the Minister of Youth Development for national recognition.

 He also presented Onyinye with a letter of recommendation and a certificate of appreciation.

 The project contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on clean water and sanitation and access to adequate sanitation facilities.
