• LAUTECH hospital strike: Resident doctors decry workload, poor pay, lament govt’s silence

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has given the hospital’s management a 21-day ultimatum to pay all outstanding salaries and allowances, warning that failure to do so could result in industrial action.

The ARD’s demands, which include resolve of all outstanding shortfalls, restoration of all omitted professional allowances, payment of all arrears arising from salary discrepancies, expedite payment of the outstanding burial rights and entitlements of deceased members and their families, were contained in a communique issue at the end of the association’s August 2026 meeting and signed by its President, Dr Olanipekun Quadri and Secretary, Dr Olorunfemi Solomon.

Relatedly, days into the indefinite strike by resident doctors at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, the doctors have decried increased workload and poor remuneration, lamenting the absence of official communication from the Oyo State Government.

The Ogun doctors said that following a comprehensive review of the outstanding demands and concerns affecting members, the congress resolved to issue the management a 21-day ultimatum to satisfactorily resolve all outstanding matters and address the unresolved issues raised by the association.

The ARD LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, however, said it remained open to dialogue with relevant stakeholders and appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to intervene in the dispute.

President of the ARD, Dr Adedapo Mustapha, who spoke on the development, said the association had yet to receive any official communication from the state government or its ministries since the commencement of the strike.

Mustapha said representatives of the Ministry of Health had only offered verbal assurances, adding that the doctors were frustrated and fatigued by the increasing workload and poor remuneration.

The ARD, which said that resident doctors in other tertiary institutions had enjoyed similar welfare provisions for several years, maintained that its demands were not solely about the welfare of doctors, but also aimed at protecting patients and ensuring quality healthcare delivery in Oyo State.
