Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, has restated the commitment of the federal government to restore normalcy to the lives of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Northeast.

Osinbajo, according to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant‎ on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande last night, spoke yesterday during a visit by the Executive Director of the United Nations (UN) World Food Programme (WFP), Ms. Ertharin Cousin to the State House, Abuja.

“We are working on how people can get back to their normal lives,” the Vice President stated, adding that the federal government was also working on how to help the children, especially regarding education and housing.

“So many people are in need. It is a tough challenge, but we are committed.” Osinbajo affirmed, while also appreciating the collaboration of international agencies, such as the UN, in the effort.

He said the federal government would continue to secure the places where the peace had been restored, stressing that dealing with the security challenges is an ongoing task for the government.

He added that the threats would reduce, even though the nature of asymmetric warfare is also well understood. While acknowledging the agency’s assistance in the region, especially regarding children and families, Osinbajo pledged more cooperation from the government.

Earlier, Cousin said she was in the Villa to brief the Acting President, extend the greetings of the Secretary General of the UN and commend the federal government for the support WFP is enjoying in Nigeria.

She said since the establishment of the inter-ministerial committee, which the Vice President coordinated, there has been a significant improvement in the implementation of the UN agency’s work in providing assistance in the northeast.
