The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress and the ruling Accord Party are in war of words over alleged post-election violent attacks on members.
While APC accused supporters of the ruling Accord Party in the state of perpetrating violence against its members after securing victory in the poll on Sunday, Accord denied, pointing accusing fingers on the opposition party, instead, for the violence.
APC condemned what it described as “the post-election violent attacks that are spreading like a wild fire across the state that is being perpetrated by the Accord Party political hoodlums on the members and supporters of the APC.”
A statement by Kola Olabisi, Osun APC Director of Media and Information, on Tuesday, claimed there have been reported incidents of the Accord Party violent attacks on the members and supporters of the party which started on Sunday after the declaration of Governor Ademola Adeleke as the winner of the governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Olabisi further alleged that the local government chairmen loyal to the ruling party, which he tagged “illegal sit-at-home local government council chairmen”, have forced their way into various local government council areas in the state.
“It was also gathered that some of the illegal state executive members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) have been forcing their ways, through thugs, into the various motor parks across the state,” he added.
APC condemned the alleged attacks, saying it’s a threat to public peace capable of plunging the state into a full-blown crisis should there be reprisal attacks.
“We are enjoining the state police command to rise up to the occasion of protecting the members and supporters of our party who are being needlessly attacked by the Accord Party hoodlums,” he further alleged.
When contacted on the telephone by our correspondent, Victor Akande, Osun Accord Chairman, denied the allegations, saying “Accord is not known for hooliganism.”
He claimed the opposition party has been sponsoring the police to attack Accord members before, during and after the elections, adding that “many of our members have been attacked and illegally detained by the police.”
“They (APC) are known for their propaganda. They are the ones attacking our members. I didn’t know any of our members attacking their members. They used police to attack our members and detained them. Please, jettison their statement, it is one of their usual lies. We are peace-loving party and our governor enjoys overwhelming support of the people of Osun State,” Akande claimed.
