The Oyo State Judiciary has again appealed to Governor Oluseyi Makinde to approve the release of statutory allowances due to judges, citing provisions of the Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc.) Act, 2024 and clarifications by the National Judicial Council.

The renewed request was conveyed in two separate letters addressed to the governor and signed by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Iyabo Yerima.

The correspondence, sighted by journalists, reiterated earlier appeals on the matter and urged prompt consideration.

In one of the letters, the Chief Judge drew attention to outstanding rent allowances due to members of the bench, describing the request as a statutory obligation backed by existing laws and regulatory guidance.

She referenced previous communications on the issue and sought the governor’s approval for payment and continued provision of the allowances.

Justice Yerima also explained the arrangement for judges residing in government quarters, noting that a stipulated rent is deducted and remitted accordingly, while those in private residences are entitled to full accommodation allowances.

In a separate letter, the Chief Judge informed the governor of the judiciary’s forthcoming annual vacation and requested approval for the payment of leave allowances to enable judges proceed on recess in line with established practice.

She emphasised that the allowances form part of the statutory benefits attached to judicial office, calculated in accordance with prescribed rates under the law.

The Chief Judge further noted that the request falls within the judiciary’s approved budget framework, with a detailed schedule of beneficiaries attached for consideration.

In both letters, Yerima appealed for favourable action and expressed appreciation for the governor’s continued attention to the welfare of the judiciary and the effective administration of justice in the state.
