The spokesman, Sokoto State Police Command, Mr. El-Mustapha Sani, on Sunday, announced the arrest of 14 suspects, after its officers raided a suspected criminal hiďeout in Sokoto.

The command Public Relations Officer disclosed this in Sokoto in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said the raid was conducted on Friday at a hideout between the wood and the grains market in Sokoto.

Sani said that the operation was conducted sequel to myriad of public complaints about unauthorised activities of some people at an illegal market called“one hour market “.

He told NAN that the market operated daily between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Sani said: “This notorious market is harbouring suspected burglars, housebreakers, thieves and other petty criminals.

“Traders in the market are suspected to be dealing in stolen electronics, handsets, jewelery and other household items.

“That was why we had to act swiftly and burst the criminals’ gang, most of whom were youths, “ he said.

Sani further said that seven out of the 14 suspects had been charged to court, adding that the remaining seven suspects had been cleared and released.

The police spokesman said that some suspected stolen telephones, electronics and jewelery were recovered from the suspects.

“The raids would be routinely sustained and replicated across the state, to make the state more secure for all law abiding citizens.

“We are also appealing to the residents of the state to render useful intelligence reports to the security agencies.

“This is to enable the various security agencies to be proactive and nip crimes in the bud, “ Sani said.
