The Lagos State Police Command has announced an investigation into claims circulating online that officers of the Lagos State Task Force, led by CSP Adetayo Akerele, have been extorting motorists by creating false traffic offences.
The allegations gained attention after a video went viral on Saturday, showing what appears to be a task force officer forcibly moving a driver’s vehicle to an illegal position on a one-way street, allegedly to fabricate a traffic violation.
The video also depicts a male voice claiming he paid ₦150,000 to avoid having his vehicle impounded, adding that other motorists reportedly pay similar amounts to escape further consequences.
In response, the Lagos State Police Command acknowledged the video through its official X account. A statement released on Sunday confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, had ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter.
“The Command is grateful to members of the public for bringing this issue to our attention and assures that appropriate measures will be taken following the outcome of the investigation,” the statement added.
This incident follows a series of complaints from residents about the conduct of the Lagos State Task Force under CSP Akerele, with previous reports highlighting aggressive enforcement practices, including alleged manipulation of drivers to commit traffic violations and demands for cash to release vehicles.
