Rainpay raises $500,000 to expand digital financial services in Nigeria

Nigerian fintech Rainpay says it has raised $500,000 at a $5m valuation to expand digital payments, settlement infrastructure and financial access.

Rainpay, a Nigerian financial technology company, has raised $500,000 in pre-seed equity funding at a post-money valuation of $5 million, with backing from Platnova, angel investors and fintech operators.

The funding will support infrastructure development, settlement capacity, merchant and agent network expansion, and product development as Rainpay seeks to widen access to everyday financial services through digital and non-internet channels.

Operated by RAINPAYTECH LTD, Rainpay offers a wallet accessible through Android and iOS applications, its website and USSD at _347_635#. The company’s supplied announcement also lists two-way SMS and voice banking; the availability and supported services of those channels should be confirmed before publication.

The platform brings together transfers, bill payments, cards, savings and contribution circles. Its wider feature offering also highlights lifestyle, business and services for children and teenagers. Services may differ by channel. Rainpay is not a bank; financial services are provided through relevant licensed partners.

The approach addresses a practical challenge: app-based services can be difficult to use when mobile data is unavailable, connectivity is unreliable or a customer does not have a smartphone. USSD can provide an alternative route to supported services without mobile internet, although the transactions available through Rainpay’s shortcode need to be confirmed.

“Most fintechs build only for the smartphone crowd. Rainpay was built for real hustlers. If your data drops, your battery is on 2% or you’re holding a basic phone, your money shouldn’t freeze,” said Dr. Amb. Benjamin Oyemonlan, executive chairman of Rainpay, in the company’s supplied announcement.

The investment comes as fintech providers seek to make digital payments useful across different devices and customer circumstances. For Rainpay, expanding settlement capacity and its merchant and agent network will be important to delivering services reliably as it seeks to attract more users.

Platnova’s investment committee described Rainpay as a potential link between cash-based activity and digital finance, citing its multi-channel technology and execution. The statement was provided in the company’s announcement and should be attributed to an identified, authorised spokesperson before publication.

Rainpay says its ambition is to make financial services more accessible and affordable across Africa. Its ability to stand out in a competitive market will depend on channel reliability, service costs and availability, and whether registrations become regular use.

The company’s public campaign rollout is scheduled for October 19, 2026. The milestone marks a wider promotional campaign, not the product’s initial launch.
