The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Hon. Ahmed Satomi, has refuted media reports claiming that the House summoned the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Satomi also clarified that there is no truth to the report that the House summoned the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, over the rise in criminal activities in the FCT.

He recalled that the House, on Tuesday, following the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Dabo Haruna (APC Bauchi) concerning the alarming activities of criminals popularly known as “One Chance” operators in the FCT, mandated its joint committees on FCT, Police, and National Intelligence to investigate the matter.

In a chat with journalists at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, Satomi emphasised that the House never summoned the officials mentioned.

“I want to correct the mistake made by many of you in the report on the motion moved yesterday on the floor of the House by Hon. Dabo Haruna regarding the killing of his legislative aide, Miss Na’imi Sulaiman, and the need to curb the activities of ‘One Chance’ operators in the FCT.

“The motion was moved by Hon. Haruna and seconded by Hon. Mohammed Isa Anja. It was passed, and the House referred it to the relevant committees for necessary legislative action.

“In passing the motion, the House only mandated the Committees on National Intelligence, Police, and FCT to conduct a comprehensive investigation and collaborate with relevant stakeholders, such as the FCT Minister, the FCT Commissioner of Police, and the DG DSS, to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice and that the problem of ‘One Chance’ incidents is addressed.”

Satomi added that the joint committee is yet to commence its legislative duties on the motion but assured Nigerians that the committees will thoroughly investigate the matter and work with security agencies to identify and apprehend the culprits so they can face the law.

He noted that the new DG of the DSS, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, is a seasoned intelligence and security professional who recently assumed office and is expected to apply his expertise to combat crimes in the FCT and surrounding areas.

“I appeal to you (journalists) to always verify your facts and be meticulous in your reporting to avoid misrepresenting information. The media is the mirror through which everyone sees the world, and it is crucial to remain factual,” Satomi stated.

It should be recalled that the late Miss Sulaiman, a legislative aide serving in Hon. Dabo Haruna’s office, was tragically murdered by her ‘One Chance’ abductors despite a ransom being paid.
