The Rotary Club of Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos, has unveiled an ambitious service agenda for the 2026/2027 Rotary year, with a strong focus on tackling bullying among young people, promoting digital education, improving healthcare, supporting maternal and child welfare, advancing environmental sustainability, and strengthening peacebuilding initiatives.

The club’s newly installed President, Rotarian Modupe Olorunnimbe, announced the priorities during her investiture ceremony in Lagos, saying the projects would align with Rotary International’s seven areas of focus, including peacebuilding and conflict resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water, sanitation and hygiene, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, community and economic development, and environmental protection.

Olorunnimbe identified digital education and literacy as the club’s flagship project for the year.

She disclosed that a school for the blind had been selected to benefit from assistive learning equipment, including laptops, desktop computers, Braille machines and audio recording devices to improve learning opportunities for visually impaired students.

She also revealed plans for medical and eye screening outreaches, noting that the interventions would go beyond diagnosis to include surgeries for patients requiring corrective procedures.

“While healthy eyes enable us to see, it is compassionate hearts that enable us to truly make a difference. Every patient, every outreach and every life touched has strengthened my conviction that service is one of the greatest privileges anyone can enjoy,” she said.

According to her, Rotary provides a unique platform for people committed to creating lasting social impact through selfless service. She pledged to strengthen fellowship within the club, deepen its community impact and expand sustainable interventions in healthcare, education and economic empowerment.

Olorunnimbe added that the club would pursue strategic partnerships, embrace innovation and encourage active participation by members, stressing that its success would be measured by lives transformed rather than the number of meetings held or projects executed.

Delivering the keynote address, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo urged Nigerians to embrace lives of service, integrity and purpose, saying the nation’s social and economic challenges could only be overcome by citizens committed to making meaningful contributions to their communities.

Speaking on the theme, “Making an Impact,” Ighodalo said the true purpose of life is to create positive change that benefits others instead of pursuing personal gain.

He identified corruption, greed, wickedness and declining moral values as major obstacles to Nigeria’s development, stressing that effective leadership must be anchored on integrity, vision, the fear of God, good citizenship and a genuine commitment to serving humanity.

The Charter President of the Rotary Club of Banana Island, Ikoyi, Elder Urum Kalu Eke, said the club was established to create a dedicated platform for community service on Banana Island. He noted that membership had grown to 40 professionals within its first year and that the club won nine awards, finishing second among about 100 clubs in Rotary District 9112.

Eke expressed confidence in the club’s future, describing Olorunnimbe as a committed leader well-equipped to build on its early achievements and further expand its impact on society.
