Save us from death on Airport Road, pedestrians beg Sanwo-Olu
Road users plying the newly reconstructed Airport Road, Lagos have decried the stoppage of a pedestrian bridge, which was being constructed alongside the new road leading to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport during the administration of Akinwunmi Ambode.
They appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to speedily complete the pedestrian bridge before fast-moving vehicles crush pedestrians who often use the road to cross from Mafoluku, Oshodi to Ajao Estate.
One of the road users, Chime Izuako, noted that the contractor has abandoned the bridge. He said: “I think the government is waiting for us to record incidences of death before they take action. How could you construct a beautiful road like this and abandon a bridge that ought to come with it? It is only in this country such things can happen. The construction company should be questioned. The state government should not wait for death to occur before they call the contractor to order.”
Another road user, Solomon Akande, said: “We need the pedestrian bridge to be completed fast at 7 & 8 bus stop as thousands of traders, students and workers live on the other side of the road.”
President Muhammadu Buhari had a few months ago commissioned the airport road during his last state visit to Lagos. Last month, the governor had given the assurance that all ongoing projects from the last administration would be continued in reference to the pedestrian bridge and Agege flyover bridge. The Guardian checks revealed that the contractors were yet to return to the site as promised.
