Panic broke out on Monday after a two-storey building reportedly collapsed along Baale Road near Ajuwon Bus Stop in Ogun State, leaving an unspecified number of occupants feared trapped beneath the rubble.

The collapse sent shockwaves through the neighborhood as residents rushed to the scene in disbelief, hoping for rescue of occupants trapped inside.

The incident draw crowd who gathered around the building while emergency responders were being waited for.

An eyewitness, who identified himself as Anthony, said only one male occupant managed to escape before the building became completely inaccessible.

He said the survivor revealed that his wife and children were still trapped inside the building, raising fears over their safety as rescue efforts were hoped to have begun.

“Only one man came out of the building. He said his wife and children are still trapped inside” Anthony said.

Authorities were yet to provide an official update on casualties or the status of rescue operations about the building collapse as of the time of filling this report

Also, neither the Ogun State Government nor emergency management agencies have confirmed the number of victims or disclosed whether a coordinated rescue effort had begun.

The incident occurred in Ogun just hours after another building collapse was recorded in Anambra State, where a three-storey student hostel known as Elite Five Star Lodge caved in at Oko, in Orumba North Local Government Area.

The hostel, located beside Tonimas Filling Station in the Amokpala area, reportedly collapsed in the early hours of Monday while occupants, believed to be mostly students, were inside the building.

Eyewitnesses said a loud noise preceded the collapse, prompting residents and fellow students to rush to the scene as trapped occupants cried out for help from beneath the rubble.

Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Anambra State Fire Service, the State Emergency Management Agency, and a police-led joint security team, were immediately deployed to the site to carry out rescue operations.

The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that several victims had been rescued alive and taken to a hospital in Oko for medical treatment.

Ikenga said that rescue efforts were ongoing to reach others who might still be trapped beneath the debris.

Also, authorities have yet to determine the number of casualties or the total number of people affected by the collapse.
