About 50 dental students and young dentists gathered at Toothmine Dental Clinic in Lekki, Lagos, for the second edition of Dental Insights with The African Dentist, a mentorship and knowledge-sharing initiative designed to prepare the next generation of dental professionals for the realities of modern practice.
Hosted by Dr. Abraham Akinbami also known as the African Dentist, the event brought together young dentists and dental students from Obafemi Awolowo University OAU, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital LASUTH, and the University of Maiduguri for conversations centred on The Future and Business of Dentistry.
The forum was created to provide a safe and engaging space where aspiring dentists and young practitioners can interact, ask questions, gain practical insights, and receive mentorship beyond what is typically covered in the classroom.
Speaking on the motivation for hosting such event, Dr. Akinbami stressed the importance of investing in young professionals, noting that the future of the dental profession depends on how well today’s students and early career dentists are equipped.
“Beyond clinical knowledge, younger people need exposure, mentorship and honest conversations about the realities of the profession. Dental Insights was created to bridge the information gap on the medical training and the business of the profession to help them make informed decisions as they build their careers,” he said.
Throughout the interactive session, participants discussed emerging opportunities in dentistry, career development, professional growth, and the evolving landscape of dental practice in Nigeria and globally. The conversations encouraged attendees to think beyond academic training and embrace continuous learning, innovation and collaboration.
Following the discussions, participants were taken on a guided tour of the Toothmine Dental Clinic facility by Dr. Akinbami, who highlighted the clinic’s operations, patient care processes, and the role of technology and best practices in delivering quality dental services.
The second edition of Dental Insights with The African Dentist further reinforces Dr. Akinbami’s commitment to mentoring the next generation of dentists and creating platforms that encourage learning, professional excellence and meaningful engagement within Nigeria’s dental community.
With growing participation and interest from students and young professionals across the country, the initiative continues to establish itself as an important platform for shaping conversations around the future of dentistry both as a profession and business.
