Tuggar’s camp says supporters intact amid protest over primary election

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar

The Campaign Organisation of the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has said that its support base is intact, adding that those who claimed to have abandoned him for the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Mohammad Abdullahi Abubakar were misleading the public.

Tuggar who contested the Bauchi State governorship primary election under APC lost to the former Governor Abubakar. Although Tuggar’s camp has insisted that Abubakar’s emergence did not represent the popular preference of the party loyalists. They wrote to the Party to review the candidacy of Abubakar and nominate Tuggar to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The organisation accused individuals allegedly aligned with APC governorship candidate Abubakar of orchestrating what it described as a deliberate attempt to create a false impression of growing support through misinformation.

Tuggar’s Special Assistant on Media, Alkasim Abdulkadir, said no member or group within the organisation had been authorised to negotiate or announce support for any other aspirant. “The claim is categorically false. It is a calculated act of political deception designed to manufacture a false narrative of momentum, mislead party members, and distort the true state of affairs within the APC,” he said.

The organisation further argued that the alleged dissemination of false information was inconsistent with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, particularly Sections 92 and 95, which encourage peaceful, responsible and issue-based campaigns.

According to the statement, the APC governorship contest should be driven by ideas, credibility and respect for the truth rather than what it described as “manufactured endorsements and media theatrics.”

They reaffirmed its loyalty to Ambassador Tuggar, insisting that its members remain united and committed to his governorship aspiration. It called on all aspirants and their supporters to refrain from spreading misinformation and to conduct their campaigns with honesty, integrity and respect for democratic principles. “The pursuit of political ambition must never come at the expense of truth,” they added.
