Turaki group urges northern govs to adopt southern govs’ resolutions
Nigeria’s unity negotiable, says Izu Umunna
Justice and Equity for Peace and Unity Initiative (JEPUIN) has called on the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) to urgently meet and endorse the resolutions of their southern counterparts on the need for Nigeria to dialogue, restructure and address the insecurity in the country.
The Chairman of JEPUIN, former Governor Saminu Turaki of Jigawa State; the Deputy Chairman, Chief Raymond Dokpesi; and the Executive Secretary, Tony Uranta, stated yesterday that the organisation was greatly encouraged by the outcome of the meeting of the southern governors, hoping that their northern counterparts would emulate such in the interest of peace, progress and ways of addressing the security and political crises facing the nation.
They stated: “We strongly implore the northern governors to meet urgently and support their southern compatriots to quickly manifest a better, stable Nigeria based on Rule of Law.
“JEPUIN affirms that the positive recommendations, resulting from the southern governors’ meeting, as contained in the communiqué, will go a long way in dousing the tension in the country, if implemented.”
The pan Nigerian organisation urged all Nigerian governors to stand as one and take practical steps to bring about their positions for the good of Nigeria and its citizenry.
IN the same vein, the Izu Umunna Cultural Association of Nigeria (IUCA) has insisted that the unity of Nigeria is negotiable as strengthened by the resolutions of the southern governors.
Commending the governors, IUCA, however, argued that it would depend on what the different ethnic nationalities that constitute the country were prepared to bring to the table.
IUCA President, Dr. Ugo Ihekum, and Secretary, Chief Tony Egwuonwu, in Jos, joined other Nigerians to thank the southern governors for their efforts, while looking forward to convocation of a national conference as they expressly requested from the Federal Government.
“Your Excellencies, your affirmation to the commitment of the people of southern Nigeria to the unity of the country on the basis of justice, fairness, equity, oneness and peaceful co-existence between and among its peoples is an eloquent testament to your unalloyed loyalty and strong belief to the continuous existence of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement added.
The pan-Igbo think-tank affiliated to Ohanaeze Ndigbo, described the governors’ meeting at Asaba, Delta State, as epic, commending them for the bold decisions taken.
