The Delta State Police command has killed a 26-year-old Bobo Ononibe, said to be a notorious armed robbery suspect who had been on police wanted list over his involvement in a foiled robbery operation in Orogun community, Ughelli north council of the state.

The Police spokeman, DSP Bright Edafe, who confirmed the story to newsmen in Asaba, yesterday, said on January 13, at about 1645hrs, the deceased was seen with other members of his gang, who gathered within the Unukpo – Orogun palm tree plantation.

He said the DPO of Orogun division in a proactive move to forestall another attack following a tip off, mobilised and led police operatives to the area.

He explained: “As they were approaching the scene, the hoodlums opened fire on the Police and the police equally responded, but the hoodlums took to flight due to the superior police fire power of the Police during the ensuing gun duel.

“The gang leader, one Bobo Ononibe ‘m’, of Ufuoma Street, Unukpo – Orogun community, Ughelli, sustained serious gunshot injuries, but was taken to the hospital where he was later certified dead by the doctor on duty.”

He said one locally made cut-to-size gun, three cartridges, one machete, one dagger, charms, among other items were recovered from them while efforts are on to arrest the fleeing members of the gang.

The PPRO also confirmed the killing of another armed robbers suspect, who was beaten by members of Ewherhe community Agbarho in Ughelli town on Monday at about 1125 hours.

He said the Police at Agbarho Division received a distress call that some members of Ewherhe community caught a suspected armed robber along ewherhe/ovu road with one locally made cut-to-size double barrel gun and one live cartridge. He was found with suspected stolen items which include, one Iphone 11 pro-max, one HP laptop, one mp3 player and N8,22.

According to the PPRO, the suspect was a victim of mob action, hence the DPO detailed patrol teams to proceed to the scene, but when they got there, the mob escaped leaving the suspect badly wounded.

He stated that although the suspect was rescued and taken to the hospital, he died while receiving treatment. Edafe further stated that the Command condemns jungle justice, and advised members of the public to desist from such acts, saying “jungle justice is not the right thing to do, but to hand over suspects to the Police for diligent investigation and prosecution”.
