UNIPORT clarifies Choba fire incident, denies victim was a student

The Management of the University of Port Harcourt has issued a statement clarifying a recent fire incident that occurred at Choba, Port Harcourt, involving a female individual identified as Cynthia Chukwundah.

Contrary to reports suggesting she was a 300-level student of the University, the Management categorically stated that Cynthia Chukwundah is not a student of the University of Port Harcourt.

The University’s clarification followed thorough internal checks and verification of student records, which revealed that the victim was not affiliated with the institution.

The Management, in a statement by Dr. Sammy Kpenu, Head of Information, Publications, and Public Relations, expressed deep regret over the loss of life associated with the unfortunate event and extended condolences to the families affected.

“We deeply regret the loss of life associated with this unfortunate event and express our condolences to the families affected,” the University’s statement read. “We are also closely following developments and cooperating with the relevant authorities to ensure that the matter is properly investigated.”

The University, however, urged members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and to allow law enforcement agencies to conduct a full and impartial investigation.

Kpenu noted that the institution remains committed to the safety, discipline, and general well-being of its students, adding that the University’s Public Relations Unit is available to provide further updates and information to the public.

Kpenu emphasized the University’s commitment to cooperating with authorities to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident.
