The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has withdrawn its earlier memorandum suspending all non-academic-related student activities, assuring students and staff that approved academic and non-academic activities across the institution will continue without interruption.

In a press release issued on Monday and signed by the Head of Information, Protocol and Public Relations, Dr. Sam Kpenu, the university said the memorandum dated July 20, 2026, titled “Suspension of All Non-Academic-Related Student Activities,” had been withdrawn with immediate effect and should be disregarded.

The management clarified that all approved activities within the university’s faculties, departments, centres, institutes and other units would proceed as scheduled, while expressing regret for any inconvenience the earlier communication may have caused to students, staff and other stakeholders.

The withdrawal came as the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Princewill Chike, moved to restore stability in the Students’ Union Government (SUG) by constituting a new Students’ Union Government Electoral Committee (ELECO) following the dissolution of the union’s executive council.

According to the Vice-Chancellor’s Media Aide, Godwin Ajah, the decision followed a disagreement involving the dissolved SUG executive, the Chief Judge and the Speaker of the Students’ Representative Council over the composition of the electoral committee, which was scheduled for inauguration on Friday, July 17.

Ajah explained that the dispute stalled preparations for the students’ union election, prompting the university management to dissolve the executive council and establish a new electoral committee to ensure a smooth transition and the conduct of a credible election.

He further alleged that the dissolved executive was involved in the misappropriation of students’ union funds, stating that the allegation was among the factors that informed the management’s decision to dissolve the leadership.

The latest development followed a meeting between the university management and representatives of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), where issues relating to the leadership of the Students’ Union Government and the electoral process were discussed.

With the withdrawal of the earlier suspension notice and the inauguration of a new electoral committee, the university management said normal activities would continue while efforts are intensified to complete the transition to a new students’ union leadership through a credible electoral process.
