UNWTO allots 100 tourism scholarships to Nigeria

United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has awarded 100 Tourism Online Academy Scholarships to Nigerians willing to undertake basic training in sightseeing.

Special Assistant to the President (Media), Office of the Minister of Information and Culture, Segun Adeyemi, made the disclosure, yesterday, in a statement.

He said the offer was presented to the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, by the UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili, at a dinner hosted by the global agency in honour of the minister and his delegation in Madrid, Spain, on Tuesday night.

Pololikashvili was quoted as saying: ”The World Tourism Organisation recognises the efforts of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and its Minister of Information and Culture, Mr. Lai Mohammed, to empower youths and boost quality education in tourism, by granting 100 UNWTO Tourism Online Academy Scholarships.”

He said the awards would lead to conferment of certificate. The UNWTO Tourism Online Academy is a partnership between the world tourism organisation and the IE University in Madrid, Spain.

Responding, Mohammed said the criteria for selecting the beneficiaries would be announced in due course.

Earlier, he and the UNWTO chief signed the hosting agreement for the maiden UNWTO Global Conference on Cultural Tourism and Creative Industry holding in Lagos from November 14 to 17 this year.
