A shift away from the thematic preoccupation of the 2026 World Tourism Day to the entire entity that makes up international travels at a time like this where countries around the globe struggle from economic downturns and inflations to the pain and inhumanity of war.
The following question is how does tourism thrive in the face of global stages set on fire from all ends? Who celebrates World Tourism Day at a time when you may have to do a scale of safe countries preference before attempting a trip?
Thus the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism” is not out of place but this is only one aspect of it for required development and seamless connectivity across the globe, but the broader part is the need for peace, sanity and cooperation in the world to allow the concept of travel and tourism truly accessible in every nook and cranny of the world.
To this end, when the chairman of the World Tourism Network and publisher of eTurboNews, Juergen Steinmetz, said World Tourism Day 2026 arrives at a particularly consequential moment, he was not mincing words.
Steinmetz in his remark on WTD 2026, the message of tourism and peace cannot remain just a slogan. “It is a responsibility. Travel and tourism is one of the world’s most powerful economic and human forces. We have to use this enormous influence to give sanity, peace, dialogue and human rights a stronger voice.”
One Tourism Entity with Enormous Branches
Steinmetz said: “Tourism is one industry. It includes governments and tourism ministries, but also airlines, hotels, cruise lines, tour operators, travel advisors, technology companies, destinations, restaurants, guides, SMEs, investors, workers, media and, most importantly, the communities and people who make tourism possible.”
The chairman of World Tourism Network believes that the purpose of World Tourism Day should be to bring this entire industry together. He said: “The ingredients are here in 2026, and WTTC has a particularly important opportunity to help build that bridge between the public and private sectors.
“This is why there has perhaps never been a more important World Tourism Day than this year’s. Although established by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), and UN Tourism has an important leadership role in it. But World Tourism Day does not belong only to UN Tourism, and it certainly should not be an observance only for the public sector; it should never be viewed as an observance belonging only to one organisation, tourism ministries or the public sector as tourism belongs to everyone. It is a day for the entire global Travel and Tourism industry.”
Tourism Is an Industry of Peace
Steinmetz noted that if tourism is truly an industry of peace, “then everyone has to be at the table. The public sector cannot do it alone, and the private sector cannot do it alone.”
