Whereabouts of abducted Rivers monarch, don still unknown
Ten days after gunmen abducted a lecturer with the Linguistics and Communications Department, University of Port Harcourt, Dr. Jones Ayauwo and monarch of Ikuru Town in Andoni Council of Rivers State, HRM Aaron Ikuru, their whereabouts are still unknown.
The Guardian recall that Ikuru was kidnapped from his residence in Ikuru Town, while Ayauwo was abducted along the Andoni-Ogoni axis on his way from a church programme at his community.
Speaking with The Guardian yesterday, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of UNIPORT, Sam Kpenu, expressed concern that Ayauwo’s abductors have not established contact with the family or the university management 10 days after he was taken to an unknown destination.
“It has been one week and two days that Ayauwo was abducted, but his kidnappers have not contacted the family nor the university community. We have not heard anything from them and the man’s family is traumatised, the university Community is worried, he is a very wonderful personality, a jolly good fellow”
“Currently, he is taking Masters Degree students on Research and the undergraduate students are taking their examinations, hence they are so worried and we really want him released. He has not hurt anyone. His wife is deeply traumatised,” he stated.
Kpenu, however, urged the security agencies to expedite action and intensify efforts to release Ayauwo from captivity, stressing that his family and the university community needed him.
“We appeal to the abductors to please release him. We feel his kidnap is a case of mistaken identity, because he has not done anything that would warrant his being kidnaped maltreated,” he added.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, said the police are working to ensure Ikuru and Ayauwo’s release unconditionally and unhurt.
On specific efforts so far to secure their release, Omoni said: “It is a security matter and we don’t need to disclose our strategies, but we are working on the matter seriously.”
