Sudan’s future would be decided by Sudanese, not from abroad, says Burhan

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan

The Chairman, Transitional Sovereign Council and Commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has declared that the future of Sudan and its people will settled by its own people, and has rejected any attempt to rule the country from outside its borders.

Addressing a public gathering in Wadi Halfa, General Al-Burhan said he opposed foreign-backed efforts to govern Sudan from abroad and made clear that those he described as agents would have no place in the country’s political life.

On the Rapid Support Forces, he restated the government’s position that there will be no talks with the militia. The group, he said, must disarm or face continued military operations.

According to Sudan Tribune and made available by the Embassy of the Republic of the Sudan in Abuja, Burhan had told the gathering that “neither Hamdok nor the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) coalition will return”, setting out a political path in which the Sudanese themselves, and not external sponsors or exiled groupings, determine who governs.

That choice, the General said, should be made through elections. “The final say belongs to the Sudanese people”, he said.
