Y’akoto returns with new single WMYT

Y’akoto is back with a new tune after releasing “Secret,” a collaboration with Kumasi-based drill rapper Jay Bahd. Like “Secret,” the Ghanaian songstress collaborated with Grammy-
nominated producer Nabeyin on the track ‘WMYT’.

Released on June 7, “WMYT” talks about Y’akoto’s experience in a toxic relationship. The song begins with how she had to jet out because she could no longer stay in that relationship.

In her own words, ‘WMYT” is “a true story of me taking off in the middle of the night, leaving my ex in the dust, realising that I will never let another living human humiliate me again”.

The lyrics of the song speak true to this, starting the song with how she took off in just her bedclothes. She then mentions how the other party tried to make her feel smaller than she was.

She regains power by reminding herself that she “is not just the star but the galaxy.” Y’akoto also directly faces her demon, asking if she was expected to stay in that relationship.

Y’akoto’s voice is rich and tantalizing and invokes the listener’s emotions as she sings about getting her shine back. Her soothing honey vocals are pleasant to listen to, and her vocal techniques speak to her experience in the music industry.

‘WMYT’ is further boosted by having a top-notch melody that perfectly complements the lyrics. Impactful in the places necessary and quieter when needed, the tune helps accompany the listener on the journey of the song.

A blend of R&B, pop, and Afrobeats with sleek, futuristic elements, the song promises to test the limits of these existing genres and how they blend. This is a testament to Y’akoto’s
motto to constantly expand as an artist.

Y’akoto started her musical journey at age 13 when she formed a band and continued to make music and tour for several years after her first record deal at 21. She then started her journey as a soloist and quickly made a name for herself as a talented singer-writer.
