A group, Yoruba Youth Socio-Cultural Association (YYSA) Worldwide, has kicked against nomination of a former aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mrs. Lauretta Onochie, as Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Commissioner.

A statement released, yesterday, by the YYSA National President, Olalekan Hammed, said: “The nomination of Mrs. Lauretta Onochie, who has strong bias towards a political party, as INEC commissioner is undemocratic and highly condemnable.

“If President Buhari-led administration truly believes in free, fair and credible elections and indeed, interested in promoting democratic system in Nigeria, INEC, as an electoral body and one of the pillars of democracy, must be free from political interference. Everybody knows Mrs. Lauretta Onochie’s role in his government.”

The group said allowing such a government brander and extraordinary hailer to man electoral umpire in that powerful position and capacity, is like strategically positioning loyalists to rig future elections, saying: “Any attempt by the Presidency to lobby the National Assembly to confirm her, despite criticisms and public outcries, is indeed, nothing but an abuse of office and misuse power…”
