The police in Enugu yesterday narrated how it arrested young girls, who specialise in getting pregnant and selling their babies to prospective buyers.
In a statement in Enugu, the police said Okike Ezinne, an 18-year-old girl from Isu-Mbaneze, Ohaozara, Ebonyi State and Promise Godwin,
20, from same area, have worked with 46-year-old widow, Gloria Okafor, from Uturu, Abia State to advance the trade. Each child born, according to the police, was sold for N300,000 after 18 months of birth.
Narrating the activities of the trio, which it said was uncovered when one of them, Gloria was nabbed, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ebere Amaraizu, stated that it had gone on for some time.
“Okike Ezinne had 18 months ago given birth to a baby girl she named Chisom and had put her up for sale on the guise that she was no longer capable to continue with the baby’s upkeep. She approached one of her friends, Promise Godwin, who asked her to come to Enugu with the child, as there was somebody who will take care of the baby.
“Ezinne later joined Promise in Enugu and both shared an accommodation at the Coal Camp axis. But after a while, Ezinne abandoned her and headed for commercial sex work to make ends meet,” he said.
Amaraizu revealed that sometime in March this year, Promise linked up with Gloria, whose occupation allegedly was to sell babies. The baby was sold to Gloria at N300,000.
