Eight guidelines to successfully set and achieve your career goals for 2018

Observably for the past three weeks, my articles have been about ‘Setting and Achievement of Goals’ in diverse areas.

The issue of Goal Setting is very critical in one’s life especially now that the year 2017 is gradually coming to an end and people have started setting goals they intend achieving in different areas of their life for the year 2018. Today’s focus is on career goals.

Every career person wants to be described as ‘successful’ but only a few know the fundamentals of having a successful career. No matter your career path, there are critical goal setting guidelines to follow if you are determined to be successful in your career field.

1. WRITE DOWN YOUR CAREER GOALS:
The issue of writing down your goals can never be over emphasised. Writing of goals has proven to have psychological effect in making one spring into the actions required to achieve set goals. Goal clarity comes from writing your goals down; it helps you become effective in your chosen career field. When your goals are not written down, they become unstable and could depreciate over time. Writing your goals engages your mind, mentality and psychology; and importantly, it empowers you to create that successful career you have envisioned for yourself.

2. SET REALISTIC CAREER GOALS:
Set goals you know you can accomplish within a stipulated time; goals you have the ability to achieve. Make sure your goals are compatible with your strength and career skills. Also, look at your present environment, situation and how your life has been few years ago; use that as yardsticks to set realistic goals for yourself in 2018. It is unrealistic for an entry-level employee who resumed work in November 2017 to set a goal to be the General Manager of the same organisation by January 2018. Nevertheless, if you think your environment or any other thing will prevent you from not achieving the career goals you have set, make deliberate effort to change the situation or environment.

3. LET YOUR CAREER GOALS BE SPECIFIC:
Everybody wants to make more money from their career, but stating the specific amount of money you intend making, makes the ‘Money Goal’ valid. When you state the specific results you intend achieving from your goals, it makes your goals valid and measurable. Do not set vague goals; you cannot be better in 2018 if you do not specifically state what you want to achieve.

4. SET HOLISTIC CAREER GOALS:
When setting career goals, endeavour to put other areas of your life into consideration; be it spirituality, family, relationship, recreation, rest, health, etc. Creating an unbalanced life for yourself as a result of your set career goals can lead to depression and will make it impossible to effectively achieve your goals. Apply wisdom when setting your goals.

5. SET A FIXED TIME TO ACCOMPLISH YOUR CAREER GOALS:
Despite writing down your career goals for 2018, you need to set a specific date to accomplish that goal. It could be 31st August, 2018; 19th October, 2018 etc. Be specific; do not say “I want to have a professional certificate in 2018” say “I want to have a professional certificate on or before 31st July, 2018”. Put a date to your career goal to make your goal come alive.

6. HAVE A LONG TERM VISION WHEN SETTING CAREER GOALS:
It is impossible to set out on a journey without knowing your destination except you are battling with psychological issues. Every goal must lead you to and align with a vision. If your goal is not leading you to a vision then that goal is aimless. For example, if your vision is to become your own boss in the next five years; you need to start now to set career goals that align with your vision – your goals can be saving a specific amount every month that will give you the financial capability to set up your own organisation; undertaking some professional courses that will empower you to set up your own organisation etc.

7. SETTING TOO MANY CAREER GOALS AT ONCE:
Setting and achieving few goals at a time makes you to effectively accomplish your goals, boosts your confidence and increases the possibility of expanding the number of goals you can successfully set and achieve another time. Do not set too many goals that will make you mount pressure on yourself because this can lead to mental distortion. It is quite unrealistic to undertake a PhD degree, undertake short professional courses and still plan to work full time. Be kind and be fair to yourself when you set goals!

8. SET CONSTRUCTIVE CAREER GOALS:
Do not depressingly set your goals. “I do not want to be earning this amount in 2018” sounds negative and unconvincing. What you should rather say is “I need to develop myself on my career, so I can qualify for a higher position and a higher salary”; this statement sounds positive, convincing and automatically puts you on the spot where you need to take action to accomplish that goal.
