Fulani attacks and historical nudge
Sir: Kunle Rotimi’s fulminations are one reason the teaching of History must be resumed in our secondary schools. Shehu Usman Dan Fodio was not an immigrant to Gobir Kingdom.
The Fulani were part and parcel of the Gobir, subjects of the King; some of them settled in towns and villages, others herding their cattle around the Kingdom. Sarki Yunfa could not have stopped the “migration” of the Fulani from Futa Toro because it happened at near “the dawn of history”, much like the migration of the Yoruba from Egypt to the south-west corner of what is today Nigeria.
A little knowledge is truly dangerous.
