The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Bauchi challenging the eligibility of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) governorship candidate, Senator Shehu Buba Umar, and his running mate, Hon. Tijjani Aliyu Mohammed, to contest the 2027 Bauchi State governorship election.
In the latest suit, the APM is challenging the eligibility of Tijjani Aliyu, alleging that his name was not included in the list of registered party members submitted by the PRP to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the deadline.
The party is asking the court to determine whether INEC acted lawfully by publishing Tijjani Aliyu’s name as the PRP deputy governorship candidate despite the alleged omission from the party’s membership register.
The APM’s legal adviser, Barrister Jidauna Tula, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Bauchi, explaining that the suit, marked FHC/BAU/CS/70/2026, was filed to seek judicial interpretation of relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
Tula said the action was intended to ensure justice and fairness in determining the eligibility of the PRP deputy governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.
He said the suit seeks to enforce sections 77(4), 77(5) and 77(6) of the Electoral Act 2026.
According to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission, Tijjani Aliyu Mohammed and the Peoples Redemption Party were listed as defendants in the suit.
Tula explained that the action followed INEC’s publication of Tijjani Aliyu’s name as the PRP deputy governorship candidate on October 10, 2026. He said the APM had asked the court to determine whether the publication complied with the relevant provisions of the Electoral Act and Sections 177(c) and 187(2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
The APM also questioned the legality of his candidacy, alleging that he was still a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as of the date the PRP submitted its membership register to INEC.
Tula further alleged that the PRP failed to comply with Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026 in submitting its membership register before conducting its governorship primary election on May 25, 2026.
The party is asking the court to determine whether the alleged breaches of the Electoral Act render INEC’s publication of Tijjani Aliyu’s name unlawful, null and void.
