Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa has emerged as the Kano State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), following a consensus-based congress held in Kano.
Doguwa, a former Commissioner for Water Resources, resigned from the cabinet of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Monday to contest the party’s top position. He emerged unopposed, succeeding Abdullahi Abbas, a close ally of former Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
The newly elected chairman previously led the party for four years before handing over to Abbas during the second tenure of former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. His return marks a decade-long comeback to the party’s leadership structure.
He was elected alongside 23 other state executive members through a stakeholders’ consensus, a decision subsequently ratified by 2,420 delegates at the congress held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata, Kano.
Other members of the new executive include Salisu Ahmad (Vice Chairman); Prof. Mohammad Yusuf (State Secretary); Prof. Nura Yaro Dawakin-Tofa (Assistant Secretary); Abdul Adamu Fagge (SAN) (Legal Adviser); Kabiru Sule Rogo (Treasurer); Umar Yusuf (Assistant Treasurer); Mauruf Abdullahi Garo (Financial Secretary); Dr. Kabiru Husaini Zawachiki (Organising Secretary); and Hauwalu Abdullahi (Publicity Secretary).
Declaring the results, the leader of the National Congress delegation from the APC headquarters, Mr. Lateef Daban, affirmed the adoption of the affirmation option that produced the new leadership and commended party stakeholders for their unity and cooperation.
In his farewell remarks, outgoing chairman Abdullahi Abbas expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the party for a decade and appealed for forgiveness from members he may have offended while discharging his duties.
