Rumours of the cancellation followed a suit by the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenging actions by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) and asking the court to reverse them.

The Enugu State government has insisted Saturday’s council election would go on as scheduled despite reports of cancellation by “ill-prepared” political parties.

Addressing reporters in Enugu yesterday, special adviser to the governor on intergovernmental and electoral matters, Mr. Vincent Egechukwu Obetta, dismissed news of the cancellation.

He blamed the story on mischief-makers intent at truncating the democratic process and causing waste of resources.

Rumours of the cancellation followed a suit by the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenging actions by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) and asking the court to reverse them.

Reacting to the development, Obetta, a lawyer, said none of the claims/reliefs sought in the suit prayed the court for cancellation of the local government election.
