Labour Party governorship candidate Olumide Akpata has strongly criticised outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki, accusing his administration of inflicting severe hardship on the people of Edo State.

In a statement released on Sunday, Akpata claimed that the suffering of Edo citizens has reached unprecedented levels under Obaseki, whose tenure began with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and ends with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Akpata said, “While the current administration marks our 33rd anniversary with celebrations and boasts of achievements, my travels across the state—from Benin City to Auchi to Uromi—reveal a stark contrast between these claims and the harsh realities faced by our people.”

He accused the government of perpetuating a cycle of deception, pointing out that despite the party switch, the administration has failed to address the needs of ordinary citizens.

“The past eight years have demonstrated a disregard for the welfare of the people, with no relief for the common man,” he said.

The Labour Party candidate highlighted various issues, including rising unemployment among the youth, struggles faced by the elderly, and inadequate support for farmers. He described the current state of Edo as one where the initial dreams of prosperity are now overshadowed by neglect and mismanagement.

Despite these challenges, Akpata expressed optimism, inspired by the resilience and innovation of the people he met during his campaign. He called for a decisive change in the upcoming election, noting that the September 21, 2024, vote is crucial for determining the future of Edo State.

“We have the power to transform our state into a land of opportunity and ensure our children aspire to build their futures here at home,” Akpata said. “This election is not just about politics; it’s about choosing a path of genuine transformation over a history of unfulfilled promises.”

Akpata also noted recent incidents involving the destruction of his campaign billboards by PDP supporters and stressed that the upcoming election will be a pivotal moment for Edo State.

The governorship election in Edo State is scheduled for September 21, 2024. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered 184,438 voters in the state during the recent voter registration exercise.
