The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has alleged a plot to compromise its officials, weaken its grassroots support and undermine efforts to build a credible opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party said the alleged scheme involved attempts to use former members and strategically placed party officials to create divisions within its ranks and sabotage its electoral fortunes.
National Chairman of PRP, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, in a statement on Thursday alleged that senior figures in the ruling party were linked to the plot and were being persuaded to provide hundreds of millions of naira to fund it.
The party warned its members and the public against supporting what it described as subversive elements, urging them to resist attempts to undermine its structures and political objectives.
Baba-Ahmed specifically cautioned against attempts by unauthorised persons to recruit polling agents on behalf of the party, alleging that large sums of money could be used to influence members to support opposition candidates outside its official arrangements.
The PRP also warned against attempts to create what it described as a “fictional PRA” using the ruling party’s funds and the names of its members.
“The party hereby alerts its members and the public to these attempts and warns against the temptation to support these subversive elements. In particular, attempts to recruit polling agents for the Party by persons with no authority to do so should be resisted.
“Huge amounts of money may be available to buy members’ support for opposition candidates by party officials. These efforts should be resisted and exposed.
“The persons in the governing party involved in this scheme have been advised to steer clear of the PRP and distance themselves from attempts to create a fictional PRA with their party’s funds and their names. Serving officers of the Party involved in this scheme will face disciplinary measures”, Baba-Ahmed stated.
Reassuring its candidates and supporters, the party said its leadership would not sacrifice their commitment and loyalty for financial or political inducements.
The PRP said it remained committed to challenging the continuation of the current administration beyond 2027 and contributing to efforts to build a credible opposition coalition capable of contesting the next general elections.
