The opposition lawmakers’ coalition in the House of Representatives has applauded the decision by the Federal High Court, Rivers State Judicial Division, regarding its declaration that there is no going back on the Rivers Local Government election scheduled for Saturday.
Spokesperson of the group, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, described the judgment delivered by Justice I.P.C Igwe as a victory for democracy.
The lawmakers accused the pro-Wike lawmakers of running around to obtain court injunctions in order to frustrate the electioneering process, while others were already busy campaigning for votes.
The lawmakers alleged that the attempt by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to stop the polls has been put to shame by this court judgment.
“This court judgment has saved democracy not just in Rivers State but in the nation as a whole. The Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, has been put to shame by this court judgment,” he said.
“We thank the Judiciary for saving democracy and upholding the rule of law. The local government election in Rivers State will hold as scheduled. The electoral laws are very simple, there’s no court order that can stop elections.”
They thereby called on leaders of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to wake up and reposition the party.
