Sheriff group doubts PDP governors’ pledge to honour Supreme Court ruling

The Senator Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has cast doubts on the resolve by the governors elected under the platform of the party to honour the expected ruling of the Supreme Court on the leadership crisis that has fractionalised the party into two groups.

The PDP Governors’ Forum had last week promised to abide by the outcome after meeting in Abuja.Chairman of the forum and chief executive of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, conveyed the stance, where he said the governors would consider the ruling as a no victor, no vanquished situation irrespective of who it favours with a view to rebuilding the party into a united entity once again.

But in an interview yesterday in Abuja, the deputy to Sheriff, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, while describing the move a welcome development, however, raised the skepticism that the governor may not keep to their gentlemanly pledge.

He said his fears followed the broken promise by same group to honour the February 17, 2017 ruling of the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The said judgment voided the May 21, 2016 national convention of the party that brought on board the Ahmed Markarfi-led national caretaker committee and affirmed Sheriff as the party’s national chairman.

His words: “Surprisingly, they reneged because contrary to their expectations, it did not favour them. “I want to say that this is the kind of stand the governors took before the Appeal Court verdict in Port Harcourt, Rivers State but when the judgment was delivered, they were very disappointed and headed to the Supreme Court.”

Ojougboh was, however, thankful to Fayose and his colleagues for their position, urging them to be gentlemanly this time around. He went on: “I want to thank Fayose for their position and especially the other governors. Their conclusion was a moral booster and gave a very great relief. And I want to also advise them not to renege on their promise this time around so that this party can move forward.”
