Anambra State chapter of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), at the weekend, restated its opposition to the N60 billion supplementary budget Governor Willie Obiano is seeking, insisting that it will not serve any useful purpose in the remaining few months of his administration.

ZLP cited the several litigations involving Obiano’s faction of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and his desperate moves to impose a successor on the state, stressing that political activities are already depleting the state’s coffers.

The party expressed concerns that if approved, the supplementary budget would end up as slush fund to pay lawyers and induce judicial and electoral officers to manipulate the November 6, 2021 governorship poll.

In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Afam Dozie Ofomata, the ZLP Governorship Campaign Council, said it had joined the Save Anambra Coalition to caution Obiano against plunging the state into indebtedness.

The party maintained that there was no assurance that the N60 billion supplementary budget would not be channelled into election expenses, especially coming barely two months to the gubernatorial contest.

Describing the ‘bogus supplementary budget’ as Obiano’s last effort to prop the floundering electoral prospects of his political godson, ZLP stated: “A detailed review of the supplementary budget, reveals vague provisions that cannot translate into development/ investment reality for the people.

“This exposed a plot to defraud the state and suppress the wishes of Anambra people during the election. It is obvious that the governor plans to waste the money in his bid to become godfather and quest to impose his choice on the state to sustain his failure and cover up the atrocious financial dealings of a failed administration.”

ZLP said it had dawned on Obiano that his candidate could not win a free and fair election in the state and had decided to amass funds for expenditure during the poll.

“We, therefore, urge all Anambra people, community unions, professional groups, traditional institutions, faith-based organisations, youth bodies, market unions and all stakeholders to be on the alert and reject this provocative budget robbery being plotted by the Obiano-led All Progressives Congress (APGA).”

“Obiano must know that Anambra State’s coffers are not an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) to service his puppet, a plot that will be firmly resisted by the people. He should, therefore, discard the idea of a supplementary budget until after the election,” the statement added.
