This year’s edition of Africa’s premiere and biggest reward system for filmmakers in the continent and the Diaspora, the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), holds today at the Banquet Hall of the Eko Hotels and Suite on Victoria Island, Lagos.

In its 13th edition, the award, which has easily emerged the most important continental filmic event that rewards and encourages African originality, is the brainchild of the Nkwerre, Imo State- born Pan Africanist, Peace Anyiam Osigwe.

It has held consistently in Nigeria, with the exception of the 10th edition, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Last year, the award took place in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, but this year, Lagos State is the proud host.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode promised in March, while receiving members of the AMAA team, led by Osigwe, that the state, being the centre of excellence, would put everything in place to make filmmakers and guest expected from different parts of the world to have a memoraable experience.

At pre-AMAA press briefing yesterday in Lagos, Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mr. Folarin Adeyemi, and his Tourism counterpart, Mr. Adewale Ashimi, said Lagos, as the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria and the entertainment hub of Africa, was ready to host the AMAA and to give guest an exciting experience. Red carpet starts at 5pm, while award proper is from 7pm to 10pm tonight.
