As Hip-hop continues its steady renaissance within the African music scene, prominent Nigerian rap collective Chop Life Crew have stepped out with their first single for the year dubbed No Excuses. On the vibrant, melodramatic bop, they are joined by acclaimed emcees Eeskay, as well as Mojo AF, with unique cadences, pace and melodies that colour the record as a noteworthy addition to Hip-hop’s blossoming library in Nigeria.

After spinning into the rap scene with their first record dubbed, CLC Step, the rap collective consisting of solo players Tim Lyre, Mojo AF, Masun Masiano, L.K, Tena Tenpo, Ronehi and Bigbadcubix, the Chop Life Crew have soared as a rap collective with periodic releases that meld relatable narratives with fusion-focused rap melodies. On No Excuses, the collective gives room to the Abuja-based drill maverick, Eeskay, and the Lagos-based rap head, Mojo AF, to soar with braggadocio-soaked verses.

Produced by Shwoff and Baniclava, No Excuses is coming at a pivotal time in Nigerian hip-hop industry when pockets of players across different markets – from the FCT to Lagos, Port Harcourt, Delta, Calabar Enugu and Imo) – are upending the status quo of pop’s monopoly on mainstream music charts, midwiving hip-hop’s comeback in African music circles. The record is a feel-good jam that emphasises the lyrical strength of both emcees, while giving rap more room to breathe in Nigeria’s current pop chokehold.

It is not essentially a didactic record, but it’s a stellar slice of Hip Hop. No Excuses is out across music streaming services.
