Excitement, as Amuwo games beckons

After months of working on the project, the stage is now set for Amuwo Odofin Local council athletes to showcase their skills at the Amuwo Games. Billed to open on November 4, the sports festival comprises of 16 games and 8 teams, who will battle for the medals and trophies.

Speaking at a media parley held recently in Lagos to herald the games, which aims at giving young people the opportunity to showcase their talents in the area of sports, Seun Ayeni the coordinator for the festival said the concept was created with the purpose of creating an event that will foster communal unity as well as youth development.

He noted that Amuwo Games was inspired by the need to promote communal unity, youth building through sports, games and competitions that provide leisure, healthy rivalry and eventually sportsmanship among the youths.

“Over 700 hundred people registered for Amuwo Games; we are still going to screen because we would need just 450 athletes. We initially thought of hosting a football competition, but we thought of carrying the women along.

“There will be 16 sports and games, which include football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, swimming, athletics, lawn tennis, scrabble, walkathon and others. We thought of making it a sports festival, but we are also using it as a medium where Amuwo Odofin Local Government can discover new talents. We took care of our working class individuals, so these games will only old during the weekends,” he said.

Speaking at the event, the Amuwo Odofin Local Council chairman Valentine Buraimoh applauded the organisers for their efforts, adding that it is not just a medium to unify Amuwo residents, but also a platform that will help discover and nurture athletes in the area.

Lagos Sports Commission and Amuwo Odofin Local Government proudly support the sports festival.
