Gregory University Partners Abia Governor, Ikpeazu

From Gordi Udeajah, Umuahia  A mutually beneficial relationship has been set into motion between the Abia State governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu and Gregory University Uturu (GUU) Abia State, who already has designated the governor as Visitor.

This development came to light Thursday evening when top members of GUU management led by its Acting Vice Chancellor professor Charles Okorafor, returned the governor’s visit at the government house Umuahia, the state capital.

GUU, which is reputed as one of the fastest growing privately owned universities in Nigeria presently had after three years of its existence secured approval of the National Universities a commission (NUC) to run a Medical College and a total of 37 degree Programmes in seven Colleges, even as three new Programmes namely; Chemical, Petroleum and Computer Engineering were being processed, which are expected to take off in the College of Engineering next session if the NUC further approves.

Ikpeazu who during his interaction with the GUU management, described GUU as a flagship in citadel of learning in Nigeria, said he was thrilled by GUU concept of education that comprised entrepreneurial education.

“Tertiary education is one area of need for the state and that the government would be prepared to facilitate and encourage establishment of institutions such as Gregory University that are of high standard.

The governor lamented that South East is yet to invest commendably in private universities or tertiary education despite the great potentials that abound in that regard and voiced out his disposition to support those who decide to invest in tertiary education in the state The visiting GUU delegation had told the governor in their address read by the Registrar, Dr. Austin Orisakwe, that the institution presently hosting the training of 292 Engineering Lecturers and Technologists drawn from 73 Federal and State universities and that thereafter, the GUU Chancellor Dr.  Gregory Iyke Ibe is to build and equip through his Company  (Skill G Ltd), four Laboratories in each of the 73 universities at the end of the training.

Assuring the governor of GUU support and partnership, the visiting delegation further told its Visitor-designate that its departments and colleges would willingly deploy their Research Capabilities to any area that could assist his government to deliver good governance including partnering to mount Skills Acquisition Programmes and Hands-on Training through GUU facilities in Printing, Water Proof Bag Making, Songhai Farms, Chalk Production among others.

According to the GUU Registrar, 13 GUU Scholars (students) are undergoing the process of securing US Travel Visas to undergo Exchange Programe with Langston University Oklahoma even as there has been similar understanding between GUU and some Ivy League Universities such as Tuskegee Alabama, Morehouse College Atlanta and Kenesos State University of Technology all in the USA.
