How Edo-born musician DETU is building his identity around hope and resilience

DETU

For emerging Nigerian musician DETU, music is becoming a means of expressing personal experiences, cultural identity and the uncertainties that accompany everyday life. Drawing inspiration from his Edo State background, the artist is developing a sound and public identity centred on resilience, emotional connection and the possibility of personal change.

Originally from Uromi, with family roots in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, DETU says his upbringing has influenced both his musical interests and the messages he hopes to communicate through his work.

He describes himself as a “Symbol of Hope”, a phrase he considers central to his artistic identity.

Rather than presenting music solely as entertainment, DETU says he wants his songs to reflect experiences that listeners can recognise in their own lives, particularly the challenges associated with ambition, relationships, uncertainty and personal development.

“DETU represents the person I am becoming and the message I want my music to carry. For me, being a Symbol of Hope means reminding people that no matter what they have been through, their story is still being written,” he said.

He wants listeners to feel understood and reminded that change remains possible.

“Life can be unpredictable, and everybody has their own struggles, but I want my music to be something people can hold on to. I want them to hear my songs and feel understood, inspired, and reminded that there is always a possibility of something better. Ultimately, I want DETU to represent resilience, growth, and the belief that things can change for the better.”

Growing up in Nigeria shaped his approach. Surrounded by different sounds, cultures, and rhythms, he draws from the energy of Afrobeats while exploring emotions, relationships, ambition, and personal experiences.

“I want my sound to reflect where I come from without being limited by it. Ultimately, I want to create music that carries a piece of my background but connects with people beyond Nigeria. No matter where someone is from, I believe there are certain feelings and experiences we all understand,” he explained.

Before music became his full focus, DETU was still defining his path, much like many others. Music gradually shifted from enjoyment to a primary form of expression.

“Music gradually became more than something I enjoyed; it became a way for me to express things I couldn’t always put into ordinary conversations. I realized that music gave me the freedom to communicate my thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a way that felt natural to me,” he said. Full commitment required discipline.

“Committing fully meant deciding to take that feeling seriously and give it the discipline it deserves. I understood that if I wanted to build something meaningful, I had to approach music as more than a passion. It had to become a commitment.”

In his final reflections, DETU emphasized the larger purpose.

“I want people to understand that DETU is more than a name or a collection of songs. It represents a journey, a perspective, and a commitment to creating music that people can connect with on different levels,” he stated.

He added that while his origins in Ikpoba-Okha, Benin City, form part of his story, the goal is for the music to travel further.

“As a Symbol of Hope, I want to keep growing, keep telling my story, and make music that reminds people that even through uncertainty, there is always something worth believing in. For me, this is only the beginning of the journey.”
