Meet Josephine ‘Jojo’ Amiegbe: The vivacious radio maven and content strategist

In the ever-evolving landscape of Nigerian media, few personalities have risen as rapidly and resolutely as Josephine ‘Jojo’ Amiegbe. Known for her electrifying voice and unrelenting passion, Jojo has built an impressive career as a radio maven and content strategist, captivating audiences with her warm personality and vibrant on-air presence. From humble beginnings, her passion for radio was sparked early on, nurtured by childhood memories of listening to the rhythmic cadence of BBC Network Africa in the morning and Voice of America at night. These broadcasts ignited in her a fascination for broadcasting, setting the stage for a remarkable journey.

Today, in Lagos—Africa’s largest city, where the energy never seems to falter—Jojo Amiegbe’s voice resonates through the airwaves, bringing joy and positivity to thousands of listeners daily. As a seasoned On-Air Personality (OAP) at Urban 96 FM, Jojo has become a familiar companion to commuters, formerly hosting the popular “Traffic The Urban Drive” and later transitioning to the breakfast show. Yet, her career as a radio host is just one layer of her multifaceted story.

Born and raised in Lagos, Jojo’s connection to radio began at home, where battery-powered radios provided a much-needed escape during frequent power outages. Her father’s penchant for tuning in to international broadcasts further deepened her appreciation for radio. Despite her early enthusiasm, Jojo’s path to becoming a renowned radio personality was not straightforward. After earning a degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Benin, she faced several setbacks and rejections. Yet, Jojo’s relentless passion ultimately prevailed, landing her first job at Raypower 105.5 FM in 2012.

Her next big break came when she relocated to Ibadan and joined The Beat 97.9 FM, where she worked for over five years. Her dynamic on-air presence garnered recognition, including a nomination for On-Air Personality of the Year at the Exquisite Ladies of the Year (ELOY) Awards in 2017. Jojo is known for her vibrant personality and impeccable voice acting skills, lending her voice to jingles and radio dramas.

In 2020, Jojo returned to Lagos and joined Urban 96 FM, a station celebrated for its youthful energy and urban contemporary music. It became the perfect stage for her to continue captivating audiences, hosting weekday shows like “Traffic The Urban Drive” and “TOUCHDOWN 10.” Her influence extends beyond Lagos, as “Touchdown 10” is nationally syndicated across SoundCity Radio stations every Tuesday by 2pm. Whether during rush hour or evening slots, Jojo effortlessly connects with her audience, creating a sense of community through the power of her voice.

“My greatest joy is meeting listeners in real life and hearing them say how much they love my shows,” Jojo reflects. “It’s incredible to know that I touch so many lives without seeing them or knowing them personally. They only hear my voice, and that connection means everything to me.”

Jojo’s versatility extends into voice acting. She made her acting debut as the voice of Dr. Anita in the radio series Aso Ebi, an introspective show that delves into the unspoken struggles of being a young Nigerian woman. This project reflects her desire to engage with issues affecting women, while using her platform to spark thoughtful conversations.

Beyond her radio career, Jojo is passionate about supporting women in media. In March 2022, she co-hosted the Urban Live Sessions as part of International Women’s Month celebrations, held at Bayroot Lounge in Lagos. The event focused on empowering women and fostering discussions around their experiences in the media industry.

Though her professional life is an open book, Jojo maintains a private personal life, with little known about her marriage and life outside the studio. This balance between public and private life adds to her allure as a media personality.

Josephine ‘Jojo’ Amiegbe’s story is one of perseverance, passion, and positivity. She has cemented her place in the hearts of radio listeners across Lagos and beyond. With a career that continues to thrive, Jojo is more than just a voice on the radio. She is a storyteller, a connector, and a source of positivity for thousands of Nigerians navigating their daily lives, reminding us that the pursuit of greatness is indeed limitless.
