Uber Nigeria, alongside Africa’s largest online travel agency, TravelStart, has rewarded outstanding drivers and riders in Lagos for their dedicated services.
Two riders were awarded return tickets to London; three drivers were given local flight tickets, while 20 other drivers were awarded items like gas cookers, refrigerators, microwaves and fans for their exceptional services.
Country Manager, Uber Nigeria, Tope Akinwumi, stated that the firm has recorded growth despite macroeconomic challenges such as increases in fuel prices and inflation, hence the need to appreciate its drivers and customers.
He said that they have also partnered with Travelstart on a project to make flight bookings cheaper and rides to the airport cheaper.
On safety, he said they ensure driver’s documents are valid alongside other relevant details.
He added that they also partnered with Sety, to offer swift services in cases of emergency, and can contact them for speedy response, adding the audio recording feature.
According to him, the firm just recently introduced Uber Bicycle to help people move their items in an ecofriendly way.
“Uber bicycles ensure goods move easily and drivers do not have to choose between carrying individuals, which is their priority or goods. It costs at least N600 to use the service.
Country Manager, Travelstart, Bukky Akomolafe, said that to reduce financial burden, the firm negotiates good deals for clients to help lower the cost of flying and sources for different options and combinations that can help make a trip cheap.
“With our partnership with Uber we give traveller’s discounts on their trip to the airport and that helps,” she said.
One of the beneficiaries, Joy Ogochukwu, an entrepreneur who specialises in online food deliveries, also conveyed her appreciation for the gesture.
She said she has spent over 2 million on Uber due to the demands of her business, particularly the Uber Food delivery service. “This is encouraging, and it is something they should try and do often,” she said.
Nightlife PR expert and Fashion Designer, Damilola Ogundele, said he won the awards because for over six years, he frequently used the service due to his type of work.
Expressing gratitude for his return tickets to London, he said he was initially skeptical but glad to have been appreciated by Uber.
