UK-based Nigerian author, Funke Solomon-Adebisi’s picture book, The Light You Bring, centres on individuality, self-worth and the everyday qualities that make each child unique.
Written for children aged 0–6 and the parents and carers who read with them, The Light You Bring is built around the idea that every child carries a unique “light”, reflected in their personality, emotions and experiences. Through familiar moments from childhood, the book considers how children begin to understand themselves and what makes them who they are.
The story touches on curiosity, imagination and laughter, as well as the self-doubt that can accompany growing up. Rather than presenting an idealised version of childhood, it makes room for different personalities and feelings that young readers may recognise in themselves.
It also acknowledges that children experience a range of emotions as they grow, including uncertainty and fear. Even during difficult moments, a child’s light does not disappear. The book suggests that reassurance, encouragement and support from trusted adults can help children feel secure and recognise their own worth.
The inspiration for the book came following the birth of Solomon-Adebisi’s son, Jared-Roy. Becoming a mother prompted her to reflect on the qualities that make each child distinct and the importance of helping children feel valued for who they are.
Solomon-Adebisi hopes the book will reach families and schools in the UK, Nigeria and beyond, encouraging conversations between children and the adults around them about individuality, feelings and self-worth. Its central message is simple: every child has a light of their own, and no two lights are quite the same.
