Full Time Job: A refreshing offering from Phyno
In the Nigerian and global music scene, rapper, singer and producer, Chibuzo Nelson Azubuike Ezege, well known as Phyno, occupies a distinct space, as he has and continues to solidify his legacy while maintaining touch with the contemporary scene.
Hence, when he made an emphatic return to the mainstream with his almost usual hit, it was with the pugnacious log drum intervals interruption hit Do I which succinctly conveyed the effortless swagger with which he has kept up with the thudding of the country’s mainstream music scene.
The track is one of the 15 songs off his highly anticipated fifth studio album titled, Full Time Job, that he recently released. With the album, Phyno has once again showcased his unique ability to deliver an extraordinary fusion of singing and rapping, both in English and his native dialect, showcasing his versatility and artistry.
Full Time Job reflects his journey as an artiste, seamlessly blending his native culture with global music influences. It is his most dynamic body of work yet. It features collaborations with some of the most exciting names in music such as Burna Boy, Fave, Chip, ArrDee, Cheque, Flavour, NSG, and Johnny Drille.
The album encapsulates the singer, rapper songwriter cum record producer’s vision of exporting his culture through music while creating a sound that resonates across borders. It celebrates his longevity as one of Nigerian music’s most dynamic voices.
It opens with the track It’s Nothing, setting the stage for a journey through Phyno’s world – one that balances confidence, introspection, and deep cultural pride. The standout tracks include Back Outside featuring Cheque; the energetic anthem, Eyes On Them featuring Chip; Do 15 Deep with Fave, and the buzzing single, Time Of My Life, featuring Arrdee.
Other tracks are Nwayo, Nwayo, Men Don Show Face featuring Flavour, Grateful, Nwoke Esike (Interlude), Trouble Maker, Pinterest featuring NSG, Do I (Remix) with Burna Boy, Sweet Karma featuring Johnny Drille, and Anthem Ndi Eze.
Speaking about the album, Phyno said, “The whole idea is that greatness is a full-time job. Anyone you see that’s super successful, from the musicians to the footballers, everyone worked overtime.”
On the creative instincts behind the album, the rapper adds, “I get into the studio and allow the music to take control. You might have an idea going into the studio but we don’t really decide the songs that we make. [For] Timeless music, most times, you allow the music to speak to you.”
To bring the beats to life, Phyno engaged experienced beat makers like Major Bangz, Duktor Sett and JaySynths, who produced the most songs on the album. The trio was behind the boards.
