Nigerian singer-songwriter Teniola Apata better known as Teni the Entertainer has always been known for her bold and unapologetic lyrics, and her latest single Money is no exception.

Co-produced by an impressive team of JaySynths, Gregg Wattenberg, Benzi, and iO, the track combines rich production with Teni’s signature soulful vocals, creating a captivating tune. The new catchy and upbeat anthem explores the paradox of wealth, recognising that while money is often touted as a source of happiness and fulfillment, it ultimately falls short of providing genuine connection and love.

With poignant lyrics like: “They say money doesn’t buy you happiness, money can’t buy you love, money doesn’t fill this emptiness, but I want all the money in the world, she sings the hook sweetly as she reflects on the complexities of material desires versus emotional needs.”

The song showcases her signature blend of Afro-pop and R&B. Its low-tempo beat allows the My Case crooner’s voice to shine, emphasising her introspective delivery, as she captures a relatable sentiment – the longing for financial security and success, even while acknowledging its limitations in addressing deeper emotional voids.

This juxtaposition resonates with many, as it reflects a universal struggle – balancing aspirations for wealth with the search for meaningful relationships.

Speaking on the inspiration behind the song, Teni said, “Money is a very special song; I wrote money at the beginning of COVID-19 lockdown. The world was shutting down, and everyone was afraid and uncertain. I had just flown back to Nigeria from a crazy tour and all of a sudden, we couldn’t go out and people were dying.”

“Almost like the universe, wanted all of us to pause and give us a reset. I remember how hard it was for people to feed themselves and their families, and I wish I could have helped everybody, but I couldn’t.

“I also saw wealthy people die, money couldn’t save them, so I said, “money don’t buy you happiness, it can’t buy you love, it can’t feel this emptiness but I want all the money in the world,” she added.
