Jazzhole to screen new docu on Lijadu Sisters, Fela Kuti, others
All roads lead to Jazzhole at Victoria Island, Lagos, this Sunday, as the culture and record store is set to celebrate Nigeria’s music legacy with a screening of Kokombe: The Nigerian Pop Scene. The documentary explores the role of Afrobeat, Juju and Highlife in the evolution of the country’s present pop music scene.
The event, which also commemorates Lijadu Sisters’ 75th birthday anniversary, as well as their recent re-issue of their 1975 album, Horizon Unlimited, which was their last record together before one of the twins, Kehinde, passed on in 2019.
“Fueled in large part by the month-long, globally-influential FESTAC ‘77 festival, Konkombe captures the outspoken yet overlooked Lijadu sisters at the centre of the movement, alongside contemporaries like Benjamin “Kokoro” Aderounmi, King Sunny Adé, I.K. Dairo, and the sister’s second cousin Fela Anikulapo Kuti,” the organisers said.
Kokombe is part of the award-winning series Beats of The Heart, directed by English veteran Jeremy Marre of Harcourt Films, and is presented in partnership with the Numero Group and Native Mag.
