From sister’s hair shop to product development: Godstime builds OsyGentle Hair Hub

OsyGentle Hair Hub founder Okolo Osinachi Godstime.

Okolo Osinachi Godstime, founder of OsyGentle Hair Hub, has described how an early experience managing his elder sister’s hair-extension shop developed into an entrepreneurial journey spanning product development, manufacturing, distribution and marketing.

Godstime, who established OsyGentle Hair Hub in 2016, said his involvement in the business extends across much of its operations, including the formulation and positioning of hair-care products.

According to him, the company has expanded its portfolio to more than 70 stock-keeping units (SKUs) of professional hair-care products.

His responsibilities, he said, include overseeing manufacturing and production as well as distribution, advertising and social media.

Godstime said the breadth of those responsibilities means his working schedule changes according to the demands of the business.

“There’s no such thing as a typical day for me as every day brings new creativity and new challenges,” he said.

His entry into the hair-care industry, however, was not initially the result of a long-term plan to establish a cosmetics business.

Godstime said his interest developed while managing his elder sister’s hair-extension shop when she was participating in the National Youth Service Corps programme.

The experience gave him early exposure to the commercial side of the hair industry and, eventually, the opportunity to explore the market independently.

He established OsyGentle Hair Hub in 2016 after completing secondary school and while awaiting admission to university.

Godstime subsequently attended Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, while continuing to develop the business.

Rather than limiting himself to product development, Godstime said he took on several operational responsibilities as the business developed.

These included processing customer orders, bookkeeping, website development and packaging design.

He said this hands-on approach gave him an understanding of different aspects of running a consumer-products company, from developing an idea to getting the finished product to customers.

Product development has remained one of the aspects he finds particularly rewarding.

For entrepreneurs in the beauty and personal-care sector, developing a product involves more than identifying a market opportunity. Formulation, packaging, pricing, regulatory requirements, manufacturing consistency, distribution and consumer acceptance can all determine whether a product succeeds beyond its initial launch.

Godstime said the opportunity to experiment with ideas and participate directly in developing products has been central to his experience at OsyGentle Hair Hub.

The company currently operates from Lagos and sells hair-care products across other markets, according to the founder.

Its claimed expansion to more than 70 SKUs also reflects Godstime’s strategy of building a portfolio covering different hair-care needs rather than relying on a limited number of products.

Beyond developing OsyGentle Hair Hub, Godstime said he wants his entrepreneurial experience to encourage younger Nigerians interested in establishing businesses of their own.

He believes sharing the realities of building a company, including the responsibilities and challenges involved, can help young entrepreneurs better understand what operating a business requires.

Godstime also said he wants to create opportunities for younger people to assume responsibilities and develop leadership experience.

His own journey, he said, has involved moving between roles rather than following a conventional division between founder, product developer and operational manager.

That experience has included everything from bookkeeping and processing orders to designing packaging and participating in product development.

For Godstime, entrepreneurship has consequently been as much about learning different functions as it has been about establishing a company.

As OsyGentle Hair Hub develops its product portfolio, he said his focus remains on product development, operations and building a business capable of creating opportunities for others.

The entrepreneur believes the experience gained from starting small and working across different parts of the company can also provide lessons for younger Nigerians considering entrepreneurship.

“There’s no such thing as a typical day for me,” Godstime said, a description that reflects both the creative opportunities and operational demands he associates with building the business.
